Abstract
In order to test that Korean red ginseng(KRG, daily 5.4 grams(can affect the serum levels of HIV p24 antigen, ¥â2-microglobulin(¥â2-MG), and CD4+T cell count, we followed for 6.4 months in 13 HIV p24 antigen positive patients with azidothymidine
treatment. Seven out of 13 patients already showed some resistance to AZT in terms of CD4+T cell counts and p24 antigen levels because 13 had taken AZT for the average of 6.4 months. CD4+T cell counts incresed in 7, p24 antigen and ¥â2-MG levels
decreased in 10 and in 9 out of 13 patients, respectively. Mean value showed significant reduction in the levels of HIV p24 antigen(p<0.01) and ¥â2-MG(p<0.01, Wilcoxon signed rank test), and some increase in CD4+T cell count. Response rate to KRG
was
67%(4/6) in CD4+T counts above 200/uL and 43%(3/7) in below 200%(3/7) in below 200/uL. These data suggest that some components of KRG have anti-HIV proliferation effect and consequently increased of CD4+T cell counts.
